First taking passengers to the summit in 1869, the Mount
Washington Cog Railway is the oldest mountain railway in the world.
It is still sometimes referred to as 'the railway to the moon', as
potential investors believed such a railway would be easier to
build. The journey on the Mount Washington Cog Railway to the top
of the 6,228ft (1,898m) up Mount Washington still runs with its
vintage steam engines and replica coaches, though on rare occasions
the trip is made with a bio-diesel locomotive.
There are incredible views at the summit of the Mount Washington
- the highest peak in the Eastern States - which offer a great way
to admire the panoramic views of the surrounding White Mountain
Range. There is a gift shop, a restaurant and a fascinating museum
all on site. The return journey on the Mount Washington Cog
Railway is equally enjoyable.
