Harz Mountains Tours by Rail

With its stunning peaks, wild landscapes and dramatic gorges, the beautiful Harz Mountains region is one of the finest in Germany. Nestled amongst some of the country's highest mountains, the tranquil area has remained relatively undiscovered; on our Harz Mountains tours we explore this marvellous place where time seems to have stood still - making its beautiful, historic towns a delight to discover.

We have a selection of holidays in the Harz Mountains, which run in both summer and winter - the region is truly a year-round destination. The exact excursions can vary according to the season, but all will take in the region's standout attractions. These include the town of Goslar, an atmospheric UNESCO World Heritage site crammed full of timber-framed houses dating back to the 16th century. Excursions also visit places such as Quedlinburg, a beautifully preserved town with a mighty 10th century castle and Romanesque architecture.

In addition to the historic towns, our Harz Mountains tours also explore its dense steam railway network; another aspect that makes the area seem like time has stood still. Many steam-powered lines are in daily use, serving the communities amongst the Harz's undulating forests and crystal-clear lakes - and in a number of places, these charming railways run right along a town's main street. We enjoy journeys through the Upper Harz National Park on the Selketal Railway, and to the summit of Brocken on the Brocken Railway.

Whichever season you decide to visit, you can be assured that your Harz Mountains tour includes a nice amount of leisure time for you to enjoy exploring around your base in Wernigerode at you own pace. As each of the holidays also includes the services of a professional Tour Manager throughout, in addition to many meals and return rail travel on Europe's efficient high-speed rail network, you are bound to find a rail holiday to the Harz Mountains that suits your every requirement.
