A little farther north of Walvisbaai, Swakopmund is also a port town and beach resort. Its German name means "mouth of the Swakop River", and reflects the town's heritage as part of the German Empire. Swakopmund was founded in 1892, and was the Germans' main harbour in Africa. As a former German town, today there are a number of well-preserved examples of colonial architecture. These include the Wörmannhaus, which features a tall tower and now serves as the municipal library. Swakopmund is the capital of the Erongo administrative district, and is an interesting place to explore.
